The 2020 All-New Ford Police Interceptor Utility

The 2020 All-New Ford Police Interceptor Utility is purpose-built for law enforcement with a standard hybrid powertrain that doesn’t compromise interior space, improves pursuit performance and aims to lower fuel costs, and it comes with standard all-wheel drive. Additional options are: a 3.0-liter EcoBoost and the 3.3-liter V6. 

I recently had the opportunity to drive all three models of Ford's All-New 2020 Police Interceptor Utility at Atlanta Motor Speedway.  These SUVs are not only powerful, they are efficient, and each could save police departments and taxpayers as much as $3,200 in fuel costs each year.

 top speed of 137 mph.

All of these options come with the 10-speed automatic transmission and with the full-time all-wheel drive with deep snow/sand and traction control drive modes. 

The standard hybrid all-wheel-drive powertrain will come with an EPA-estimated 24 mpg combined fuel economy rating. In testing conducted by the Michigan State Police, the new Police Interceptor had the quickest 0-100 mph time, fastest lap, fastest average lap and the top speed of 137 mph.

I was impressed by the safety technology in the 2020 All-New Ford Police Interceptor Utility .  The Police Perimeter Alert system monitors a 270-degree area around the SUV. This system can help detect “potentially threatening behavior” by alerting the officers to movement in that 270-degree area. When such motion is detected, the system automatically turns on the rear camera, sounds a chime, rolls up the windows and locks the doors. 

Motion trails of the detected threat appear on the digital instrument cluster so officers can monitor.

Additional features include pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, forward collision warning and a unique disable switch for law enforcement allows officers to temporarily override the system to perform precision immobilization technique maneuvers when necessary. 

Officers will also be able to access the rear-view camera on command. 

 

The interior of the 2020 All-New Ford Police Interceptor Utility is designed for comfort and function.

 

Ford Police Interceptors remain the only vehicles in the world engineered to meet Ford’s stringent 75-mph rear-impact crash standard. The federal standard for such testing is 50 mph. 

Additionally, safety cell construction directs collision force around the occupant compartment, and features advanced ultra-high-strength boron steel, crumple zones that absorb and dissipate crash energy, and SPACE architecture that provides structural reinforcement and side-impact protection.

The 2020 All-New Ford Police Interceptor Utility were tested for enhanced police durability, including improved cooling, specially tuned braking system, front-door tethers, and police-purposed steel wheels, tires and hubcaps that are designed to withstand the rigors of a chase.

Ford revealed the first pursuit-rated hybrid police cruiser will run on battery-only at speeds as high as 60 mph.  Once it surpasses that, it will automatically switch to the engine and battery working together.

Pursuit-rated means that police agencies have given a vehicle the sign of approval for being strong enough to handle police chases for long periods of time over an assortment of terrain and obstacles.

This is impressive.
