On Location: Black Panther
Movie markers line the sidewalks of historic downtown Griffin, Ga. |
Griffin, Ga.,
is a thriving metro Atlanta suburb, located approximately forty-five miles
south of Atlanta. Listed on the National
Register of Historic Places, Griffin features a walkable downtown
district. Since the early eighties,
this charming city has been featured or used as a production site for movies
and television series, including Driving Miss Daisy, Murder in Coweta
County, Mississippi Burning, The
Fighting Temptations, Rectify,
The Walking Dead, The
Hunger Games, Jumanji, and Black Panther.
In Black Panther, South African arms dealer
Ulysses Klaue, played by Andy Serkis, is shot by Killmonger in an airfield in
South Korea. Although some of the scenes in Black Panther were filmed in South Korea, this particular scene was
shot at an abandoned airfield in Griffin.
The airfield is
owned by Atlanta Air Recovery and Storage, a local aviation company, and is not
open to the public.
With special
permission, I had the honor and privilege of photographing the vintage beauty
of this location. Highlights
below:
Sincerest
appreciation to Robert Mohl, Director of the Griffin-Spalding County Airport
and Todd Thaxton, Recovery Specialist and Manager of Atlanta Air
Recovery for their time and consideration!
