Peaches and Volkswagens: A Unique Summer Tradition

The South Atlanta Air-Cooled Club at Gregg Farms.

On July 12, I found myself drawn to Gregg Farms in Concord, Georgia, in search of their famed cinnamon pecan bread. As I arrived, the air was sweet with the scent of ripening peaches.  To my surprise, I stumbled upon an unexpected yet delightful sight—a vibrant gathering of the South Atlanta Air-Cooled Club.

Rows of vintage Volkswagens, each lovingly maintained, dotted the landscape, their owners mingling and sharing stories. As it turns out, this quirky combination of VWs and peaches is an annual summer tradition, creating a unique blend of nostalgia and local flavor that captivates both car enthusiasts and peach lovers alike.

Understanding the Air-Cooled Volkswagen

An air-cooled Volkswagen is a vehicle equipped with an air-cooled engine. Unlike traditional engines that utilize liquid coolant, these engines depend on circulating air to maintain optimal temperature. This unique design features cooling fins on the engine casing and an integrated fan to effectively dissipate heat. Air-cooled engines are celebrated for their simplicity, lightweight construction, and ease of maintenance.

How Air-Cooled Engines Work

  • Cooling Fins: The engine block and cylinder heads are equipped with fins that increase the surface area, enhancing heat transfer.
  • Airflow: A fan circulates air over these fins, efficiently removing heat from the engine.
  • Ducting: Some models incorporate ductwork to direct airflow more effectively, which can be particularly beneficial for cabin heating.

Key Features of Air-Cooled VW Engines

  • Simplicity: With fewer components than water-cooled engines, such as the absence of a radiator, water pump, or coolant, these engines are less complex.
  • Lightweight: The absence of heavy cooling systems makes these engines considerably lighter than their water-cooled counterparts.
  • Reliability: When properly maintained, air-cooled engines are known for their longevity, often lasting for decades.
  • Ease of Maintenance: Their straightforward design makes them easier to work on, which can be a significant advantage for DIY enthusiasts and professionals alike.

Air-cooled Volkswagens offer a unique blend of simplicity and reliability, making them a beloved choice for many automotive enthusiasts.

Two of my favorites were the 1972 VW Bus and the 1973 VW Thing, as seen below:
